Notes from the Summer Program Director

Monday, July 5th, 2010

Next week Wednesday, July 14th, we will be celebrating the 125th anniversary of camping. For this event, we will be joining other camps in the “World’s Largest Campfire”.  This event will also serve as our “Friends and Family Campfire” for the summer. Invitations are still being sent out to all alumni and families, and we hope to contact everyone associated with camp. Yet, I would like to personally invite everyone out to camp for the event – it should be a very memorable campfire. So, as we approach this momentous occasion, I have started to think about my favorite campfire moments in the 18 years that I have been connected to Minikani. Over the next week and a half, I hope to recount some of my personal campfire favorites. I would also welcome all others to share some of their favorite campfire memories as well.

#5 – Spam, spam, spam and spam
My first year at camp, I was in Cabin 16 with Brett Haydin as my counselor and Ryan Maxwell as my LT 3. The one distinct memory I have of Ryan was his collection of Monty Python skits. He used to play them for us every day during rest period and before bed. In our cabin, we had a personal favorite of the “Spam” sketch. When we decided to do it for the closing campfire of the session, we listened to this sketch non-stop for three days in order for all of us to memorize our parts, which never really happened. When it came time for the campfire, we butchered the skit. That didn’t matter to us, though; it was such a proud moment for all of us in the cabin. I will never forget that as the first time I ever performed in front of camp.
