This Week at WSA

Friday, July 9th, 2010

If you had stopped by the Wilderness Skills Area this week, you might have seen…

  • Kids catching worms and bugs for a giant bullfrog living in the Nature Lodge
  • A boys vs. girls one-match fire competition (it was a tie—they both made successful fires in the fire pits)
  • Explorers learning how to chop and lash
  • Beetle races (the Stag Horn Beetles proved to be the fastest so far!)
  • Campers practicing their spear fishing technique on land and in the water
  • Culinary creativity coming out for our Friday Fish Fry—bluegills, sunfish, and bass from our own Amy Belle Lake cooked right over the fire in the Girls Unit!

Since the mosquitoes have been feasting on us all week, we’ve decided it’s time for WSA to have our own feast this weekend! We got warmed up with the fish fry today, and on Saturday we’ll add more to the menu: wild carrots, greens gathered from the woods, and maybe some pine needle tea. Mosquitoes definitely won’t be on the menu, and we hope they stay away for a while so we can enjoy our foraged feast!
